Life-Skills and Long-Term Support
1. Understanding Consequences
In Harry K. Wong and Rosemary T. Wong's text, The First Days of School, they maintain that it essential for students to fully know the importance of consequences. Not only are their negative consequences for poor choices, but there are positive consequences for good choices. In my classroom, my students will have the freedom to choose how they want to approach the work. However, they are not free from the consequences that follow their choices. |
2. Improvement Over Perfection
My goal is not for all of my students to obtain academic perfection. In my classroom, my students will know and learn that improvement is what really matters. In order to implement this life-skill into my classroom, I will have my students reflect often not only on their academic performance, but on their personal performance. (Breax, 131)

3. True Colors Test
Understanding our personality is essential to being able to manage emotions and maintain self-discipline. Don Lowry established four different colors to represent the four different personality types. Although any student can have qualities from multiple different "colors," the test will help them better understand their personality tendencies more clearly. Therefore, each of my students will take the true colors test. This will not only help me as a teacher, but help my students better understand who they are. |
4. Current Events
Part of preparing students for life after high school is providing them with information on what is happening now. When it comes to choosing the content for the year, I will ensure that I provide for my students real world connections in order to make their learning meaningful.

5. Conflict Resolution Skills
No matter what path students choose to take after high school, they will need to know how to resolve conflict. Whether they attend college, move out, live at home with their parents, go to work, or get married, conflict resolution will follow them wherever they go. Therefore, I will teach my students how to effectively and appropriately approach conflict. They will learn, individually and cooperatively, to handle different situations by identifying issues and establishing solutions.

6. Establishing Formal Communication
It is important that students learn how to communicate formally with authority. Therefore, I will have constant communication with my students through email. Therefore, they can practice sending formal emails out. This is a skill that they will need to know when communicating with colleges, professors, businesses, and bosses.
