Somewhere Else to Plan
1. Self-Manager Help Groups
In Self-Manager Help Groups, there are Student Self-Managers who pair up with students every Friday to review things such as: missing assignments, make-up work, revisions, and organizing their work to prepare them for the following week. This a strategy suggested by Harry K. Wong and Rosemary T. Wong in their text The First Days of School. This gives students who are struggling with organization the opportunity to meet with someone each week or bi-weekly to ensure that they are staying organized.

2. Bi-Weekly Reflection Time
In order to have my students progress, it is essential that they learn how to reflect. Therefore, I will have my students reflect on both their behavior performance as well as their academic performance. This is a reflection that I will have them fill out somewhere other than the classroom so that they can distance themselves from the classroom space. |
3. Take Multiple Intelligences Test
Founded on Gardner's eight multiple intelligences and adapted by Jean Maund, the Multiple Intelligences Test provides both students and teachers with valuable information on how each student learns best. This test would be particularly beneficial to take during the first week of school. An easy assignment would be for students to go home and take the Multiple Intelligences test and bring in their results the following week.

4. Provide Students Additional Time To Work
The classroom setting is not the ideal work environment for all my students. Even if there is complete silence, it is full of distractions. Therefore, I believe that it is necessary to provide additional time and spaces for students to succeed. I will ensure that there is a Learning Center available for students to complete things such as in class essays or exams. I will also give students the opportunity to meet with me to outside of class time so as to give them the opportunity to ask questions they may have been unable to ask during class time.

5. Involve the Counselor
It seems that the idea of visiting the counselor has received a negative connotation. However, I believe that school counselors have the resources, background information, and experience necessary to appropriately approach any student. The article "Promoting Change Through Relationships" emphasizes the need for human relationships in order to reflect positive behavior. Therefore, I would make sure that my students also have a positive relationship with their counselor.

6. Circle Meetings OUTSIDE classroom
Circle meetings are often conducted in the classroom. However, it may be more beneficial to have a circle meeting the comfort of the students' home or somewhere other than the classroom. Circle meetings give students the opportunity to voice their emotions and concerns to teachers, parents, peers, and/or administration in a more comfortable, intimate, and less intimidating environment.
